The Etiquettes of Women Walking in the Streets

As Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh! I hope this finds you close to Allah & in the best of health and Iman, Ameen.

The Etiquettes of Women Walking in the Streets

For women to emerge from their homes is for them to walk separately from
men. The best way to achieve it is to walk on the side of the street closer
to the buildings.

Abu ‘Usaid Ansâri (radillahu), reported that once the Prophet (sallahu
alayhi wa salaam), came out of the Masjid. On the street men and women were
walking very close together. When he saw this, he said, “O women! Get in the
back. You should walk on the side of the street rather than in the
middle”[1]

The narrator reported that afterwards the women became so careful about
walking on the sides of the streets so much so that their garments rubbed
against the walls.

‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (radillahumah) , narrated that the Prophet (sallahu alayi
wa salaam), said: “It is not permissible for women to emerge from their
homes except in dire necessity; and they should not walk on the street
except on the sides (i.e., meaning close to the buildings)”[2]

Anas bin Mâlik (radillahu) , narrated that the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa
salaam), was once going somewhere. In the street, there was a woman walking
in front of him. “He asked her to walk on the side. She replied, “ The road
is quite wide” The Companions (radillahu yun hum), of the Prophet (sallahu
alayhi wa salaam), became very annoyed. He said to them “leave her alone she
is a mutineer.”[3]

Sisterhood - A Beneficial Reminder

As Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh! I hope this finds you close to Allah & in the best of health and Iman.

Sisterhood - A Beneficial Reminder
Author Anonymous

My dear and humble sisters in Islam, today I experienced some fitnah amongst my companions that has lead me to do some contemplation on the fact that if we all, and I speak firstly to my self and then to my dear sisters upon guidance and righteousness, think several times before we speak and even several more before we act to make sure that our actions are accordingly being done upon the adab of the Qur'aan and Sunnah, then so much of the fitnah nameemah, and gheebah that goes on amongst the sisters would be prevented. We must Tacki Allah before we perform any action towards our sisters in Islam, and be mindful tat we will be held accountable for our actions, here is a brief reminder upon sisterhood . . .
This is what the bond of Sisterhood in Islam means to me, based upon the wisdom of Allah and his Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihe Wa salaam),
"...And lower your wing for the believers (be courteous to the fellow-believers) ." (Al-Hijr 15:88)
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihe Wa salaam) said,
"None of you has Iman (faith) until he desires for his brother (or sister) Muslim that which he desires for himself (or herself)." (Bukhari and Muslim)
He (Sallallahu Alaihe wa Salaam) also said,
"The Muslims in their mutual love, kindness and compassion are like the human body where when one of its parts is in agony the entire body feels the pain, both in sleeplessness and fever." (Bukhari and Muslim)
I love you for the sake of Allah (Subhanna wa Ta'alaa) ...
The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihe wa Salaam) said,
"On the Day of Judgement, Allah, the Most High, will announce, 'Where are those who love each other for the sake of My pleasure? This day I am going to shelter them in the shade provided by Me. Today there is no shade except My shade." (Muslim)
I will be sure to tell you of my love, Insha-Allah ...
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihe wa Salaam) said,
"If a person loves his brother, he should inform him of this fact." (Abu Dawud and Tirmidi)

I will be merciful and compassionate toward you, Insha-Allah ...
Allah (Subhanna wa Ta'alaa) says,
"Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are severe against the disbelievers, and merciful among themselves.. ." (Al-Fath 48:29)
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihe wa Salaam) said,
"Do not be envious of other Muslims; do not overbid at auctions against another Muslim; do not have malice against a Muslim; do not go against a Muslim and forsake him; do not make an offering during a pending transaction. O' servants of Allah, be like brothers (or sisters) with each other. A Muslim is the brother (or sister) of another Muslim; do not hurt him (or her), or look down upon him (or her) or bring shame on him (or her). Piety is a matter of heart (The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihe wa Salaam) repeated this thrice). It is enough evil for a person to look down upon his Muslim brother (or sister). The blood, property and honor of a Muslim is inviolable to a Musilm." (Muslim)
I will keep company with you, Insha-Allah ...
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihe wa Salaam) said,
"Keep company with a believer only, and let your food be eaten only by the righteous." (Abu Dawud and Tirmidi)
He (Sallallahu Alaihe wa Salaam) also said,
"A person is likely to follow the faith of his friend, so look whom you befriend." (Abu Dawud and Tirmidi)
I will help you when necessary and I will cover your shortcomings, Insha-Allah ...
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihe wa Salaam) said,
"One who helps a fellow Muslim in removing his (or her) difficulty in this world, Allah will remove the former's distress on the Day of Judgement. He who helps to remove the hardship of another, will have his difficulties removed by Allah in this world and in the Hereafter. One who covers the shortcomings of another Muslim, will have his faults covered up in this world and the next by Allah. Allah continues to help a servant so long as he goes on helping his own brother (or sister)." (Muslim)

I will encourage you to the right, Insha-Allah ...
Allah (Subhanna wa Ta'alaa) says,
"The believers, men and women. are Auliya (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another, they enjoin (on people) Al-Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamio Monotheism and all that Islma orders one to do), and forbids (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. polytheism and disbelief of all kinds, and all that Islam has forbidden); they offer their prayers perfectly (Iqamat-as-Salat) ; and give the Zakat and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will have His mercy upon them. Surely, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise." (At-Tauba 9:71)
When the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihe wa Salaam) instructed,
"Help your (Muslim) brother (or sister) when he commits a wrong and when a wrong is committed against him, someone asked, "O Messenger of Allah, I understand how I can help him if a wrong is committed against him, but how can I help him if he is himself committing a wrong?" At that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihe wa Salaam) answered, "Stopping him from committing the wrong is helping him." (Bukhari)
I will fulfill my minimum duties and beyond, Insha-Allah ...
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihe wa Salaam) said,
"A Muslim owes six obligations towards another Muslim: when you meet him (or her), salute him (or her) saying 'Assalamu Alaikum; when he (or she) invites you, accept his (or her) invitation; when he (or she) solicits your advice, advise him (or her) sincerely; when he (or she) sneezes and praises Allah, respond with the supplication Yarhamuk Allah (Allah have mercy on you); when he (or she) falls sick, visit him (or her); on his (or her) death, join his (or her funeral)." (Muslim)
He (Sallallahu Alaihe wa Salaam) also said,
"When a Muslim visits his (or her) Muslim brother (or sister) who is sick, he (or she) certainly gathers the fruits of Paradise until he (or she) returns (from visiting)." (Muslim)
Insha-Allah. I will strive to fufill each of these rightsto you to the best of my ability, Insha-Allah. And likewise In sha Allah you will do the same for all of your sisters in Islam. This will not only enhance our bounds of Sisterhood, but will also strengthen the fibers of the Muslim Ummah. Our ultimate goal is to gain the pleasure of Allah (Subhanna wa Ta'alaa), as well as His Mercy and Blessings, Insha-Allah. May we both find the true peace that comes with being a Muslim and attaining the highest of rewards: Paradise. Ameen!!!

A Muslim Woman & Free Time

As Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh! I hope this finds you close to Allah & in the best of health and Iman.

A MUSLIM WOMAN AND FREE TIME

By Sr. A. Mosher

Free time. Everyone seems to wish they had more of it. Being a wife and
the mother of seven children I have often thought to myself that if only
I had some free time I would … What would I do? Here we come to a
universal truth about free time. It is used in one of two ways. Either
it is put to good use or it is wasted, sometimes in sinful use. Of
course, we will all agree that performing some sort of 'ibaadah would be
the ideal use of free time. However, we often forget that the
performance of 'ibaadah is the very reason for our life on earth. Allah,
ta'aalaa says:

I have not created jinn and humans except so that they may worship.
[Adh-Dhaariyaat 56]

Allah did not create humans without reason. Nor did He create them for
the sake of spending their time in pointless activity. He created them
for 'ibaadah in the complete meaning of 'ibaadah - worship of Him as the
one Almighty Lord of the Worlds. 'Ibaadah refers not just to ritual,
physical, and mental acts of 'ibaadah such as salaah, siyaam, zakaah,
and Hajj. These are the arkaan of 'ibaadah. The true and complete
meaning of the word 'ibaadah includes much more. As Ibn Taymiyah puts
it, 'ibaadah is "a comprehensive word that refers to all that Allah
loves and all that pleases Him."

So…how does all this tie in with a woman and free time? If we
examine the question and take a deeper look at exactly how 'ibaadah is
performed in a woman's life, the desire for "free time" takes on a new
meaning. Adh-Dhahabee related in Sayr A'laam An-Nubalaa from Asmaa bint
Yazeed ibn As-Sakan (radiallahu 'anhaa) that she went to the Prophet
(sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and said, "O Messenger of Allaah, may my
father and mother be sacrificed for you. I have come to you on behalf of
the women. Verily Allaah has sent you to men and women. We have believed
in you. We do not go out and we remain in your homes. We are your source
of physical pleasure. We carry your children. A man goes out to pray
jum'ah and jamaa'ah, and follows the janaazah. And if you go out for
hajj, or 'umrah, or jihaad, we look after your wealth. We wash your
clothing. We raise your children. Shall we not share in the reward?" The
Prophet (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) turned to his Companions and
said, "Have you ever heard anything a woman has said better than what
she has said?" Then he said to her, "Understand O woman, and inform the
other women. Indeed a woman's perfection of her relationship with her
husband, her seeking his pleasure, and doing that which he approves of
is equivalent to all of that." Asmaa left exclaiming "Laa ilaaha
illallaah. "

Here, the Prophet (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) explains an important
aspect of 'ibaadah which applies uniquely to women. He informs us of the
way to her success and how she has been granted this distinguished form
of worship, one that many of us complain about. It is equivalent to
jihaad, praying jum'ah and jamaa'ah. It is commensurate to participating
in the janaazah, performance of hajj and 'umrah. This 'ibaadah is the
perfection of her relationship with her husband her seeking his
pleasure, obeying him, and doing that which he approves of. It is the
caring for her children and her home and remaining within her home.
Allah, ta'aalaa, in His incomparable mercy, has provided her with other
deeds which replace those deeds that men usually perform, so that she
may achieve equal reward.

One might argue that most all women participate in these actions on a
daily basis, even the disbelieving women. However, the concerns of a
Muslim woman are nobler. She sets her sights high in her actions. She is
aware that her every act, when performed Islamically, is an expression
of her worship of Allaah, ta'aalaa. What is it that makes a woman wish
for free time? Usually it is a need for a more personal time period
wherein she may direct her energies into something that she would
individually benefit from and enjoy. There is nothing wrong with this
and indeed, when done with the correct intention, this too falls into
'ibaadah. However, the waste of free time is an evil that many of us
succumb to. The world is filled with opportunities for us to waste our
time. Shaytaan whispers here and there and before you know it we've
intended well but failed to follow through. All of us are prone to
wasting our time or failing to take opportunities to use our time well.
This is how it happens:

Tasweef - Putting things off until "later". It is very easy to fall into
a rut of aspiring to do good while not putting forth a sincere effort.
Success in doing good things with our time is much like repentance. Is
repentance sincere if you just think about it, express your desire to
repent, and then say, "Oh, maybe I'll repent next month"? Similarly, if
you wish to memorize Qur-aan, or further your knowledge, but continually
put your efforts on a back burner, you've fallen into tasweef. In order
to succeed at something we must first rectify our intention, then make
sure that the thing we are aspiring to is in accordance with the Qur-aan
and Sunnah, and finally we must step forward with a firm foot. We must
be serious in our commitment.

Going Out. Affairs outside our home can be harmful as well as haraam.
Would you even think that going shopping could fall into this? Don't be
surprised. Islam directs that a woman is primarily meant to remain in
her home. She may come out for her needs. If she goes out, according to
the conditions of the sharee'ah, for a need which her husband cannot
fulfill for her, then there is nothing against that. But, sometimes we
fall into a western mentality of role sharing. Now there is nothing
wrong with a husband helping his wife out and vice-versa. However, a
woman taking over responsibilities of the husband with the intention of
"making things easier on him" is skirting on the questionable. This is
particularly so when we talk of shopping and other such needed but not
always necessary tasks. A better way would be to organize herself and
her household affairs and that of her children by simplifying her
lifestyle and cutting back on the unnecessary. A Muslim woman's constant
going to the markets to make the household purchases and her desire to
do so is wrong. Some women have no intention to purchase anything. They
just want to walk around the market and see what's new. Maybe there's a
new style, new material, something nice. So she has no true need to go
out. And we know the hadeeth of the Prophet (sallallahu 'alaihi wa
sallam) who said, "If a woman goes out of her home Shaytaan will attract
attention to her presence." [At-Tirmidhi Saheeh] meaning he will draw
attention to her presence and make use of the opportunity either in
tempting her or tempting others through her. If a woman remains in her
home then shaytaan cannot do this. The Prophet (sallallahu 'alaihi wa
sallam) also said that if a woman goes out of her home she "appears in
the form of a shaytaan and she leaves in the form of shaytaan." [Muslim]
How? The scholars have said that shaytaan comes to those who are before
her and make her coming out appear attractive to those who are looking.
And when she leaves he makes her appear attractive to those who are
present and see her leaving. So she causes people to look at her and she
causes their temptation. Allaah, ta'aalaa and His Messenger,
sallaallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, have ordered us to remain in our homes
and to come out only for true need to do so.

"And remain in your homes" are the words of Allaah addressed to the
believing women and the wives of the Prophet (sallallahu 'alaihi wa
sallam). The word in the aayah, "qarna" means to remain and adhere.
Allaah has ordered the woman to adhere, to stay, and not merely to sit,
in her home. She should accustom herself to staying home and not going
out. And if she does go out she should feel uncomfortable in doing so. A
sign of eemaan of a true believing woman is her feeling that her home is
where she belongs. And a sign of a diseased heart is that of a woman who
feels uncomfortable staying at home. Examine your heart for the
stirrings of disease. Treat yourself by applying Allaah's command. By
rectifying our hearts contentment can be bred and truly appreciated.

The Telephone. Ah, the telephone. A wonderful invention it was, without
doubt. It did away with a lot of travel, sending messages by hand, and
unexpected visitors. But it also brought us the opportunity for wasting
large blocks of our time and, sometimes, committing serious sin such as
talking about things that are none of our business. A telephone does
indeed fulfill a need for us as women. It provides us with an
opportunity to "visit" with our friends and family without leaving our
homes. We can share a cup of tea with a friend as a relaxation from the
occupation of daily chores. But, it can also steal valuable time that
can be put to more beneficial use. Use it with attention and care or you
will find that it will use you.

The Value of Women & their Position before the time of Prophethood

As Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh! I hope this finds you close to Allah & in the best of health and Iman.

The Value of Women and their Position before the time of Prophethood

Umm Musa. She realized the value of women and their position before the time
of Prophet-Hood. She praised Islâm for glorifying and exalting her, and she
thanked its first call for being concerned with her and for its guidance.
She did not leave men to do things by themselves without her. Just as she
followed the new religion in all stages in faith and punishment in its path,
and migrated to it and called to it by tongue and by the sword by herself
and along with her family members, husband, son and family. So as to
safeguard the din and show enthusiasm for it and she dedicated her night and
day to it along with her travel, her presence, her residency and her Hijra
(migration), as a virgin, as a wife and as a mother.

She was dutiful and at times surpassed men, as the first of the believers
was a woman and the first martyr in the path of Allâh was a woman and
likewise she was dutiful in spreading the din and preserving it, accepting
it and conveying it. It is known that some women were those who reported
thousands and hundreds and tens of ahadith of the master of the Messengers.
Her condition progressed and the Muslim woman increased in self-trust,
mighty status and happiness with Islâm. From women were to be found
admonishers, scholars, jurists and Hadith specialists throughout the
different times and epochs, in all areas and regions. She found herself
after loss and ruin and from going from condition to condition, from a
condition wherein she was a despised thing within the family and society
during her childhood and her youth with no rights, no respect and no care
for her opinions and presence.

Men enslaved her submissiveness and if she was asked she would not answer
and if she was needed to gather firewood, fetch water, pick-up the
date-kernels for the camels and feed the dogs she had to do it if she quiet.
She was a garment for the thirst of desires in aversion and distrust as from
the day of her entry into the world faces would be grieved and souls would
be perplexed and disturbed as to what to do with her, should the father keep
the baby girl or bury her alive in the ground? Her glad-tidings were thus
indignation, anger and to be buried alive into the earth, yet intelligence
was her distinctive character throughout the length of her time with the
light of the heavens and guidance of the Prophets. Men with their idolatrous
actions and upbring of soothsaying tried to conceal her delightful origins
and yet her body, shining and glowing and not fearing or turning away.

Women Wearing Perfume Outside

As Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh! I hope this finds you close to Allah & in the best of health and Iman.

AbdurRahman.org | April 19, 2011 at 5:28 PM | Categories: Islam, women | URL: http://wp.me/p1VJ3-yU
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful...

The imaam, Aboo Daawood {d.275) collected in his Sunan (#4174) that Aboo Hurayrah encountered a woman who was wearing perfume, and the tail of her garment was dusty.  He said, "O servant of al-Jabbaar!  Have you come from the masjid?"  She said, "Yes."  He said, "And you have perfumed yourself for that purpose (i.e. praying in the masjid)?"  She said, "Yes."  He then said, "I heard my beloved Abul-Qaasim (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) saying:
"The prayer of a woman who wears perfume to go to the masjid is not accepted until she returns and takes a bath, like the bath of janaabah (after sexual intercourse, i.e. a full bath)."
Understanding the Hadeeth:
[1] The hadeeth was also collected by Ahmad, Ibn Maajah and others, with a weak chain because of 'Aasim ibn 'Ubaydillaah.  However, it is strengthened by another chain found in Saheeh Ibn Khuzaymah (1682).  The latter chain is also weak, however they strengthen each other and thus the hadeeth is considered authentic, classified as: hasan lighayrihi[1].  Ibn Khuzaymah considered the hadeeth to be authentic.  Al-Albaanee authenticated it in as-Saheehah (1031).

[2] The statement, "like the bath of janaabah" specifies that the intention is not to just remove the perfume from the place it was applied, but rather a full bath must be taken.

[3] Some people may misunderstand the hadeeth to be specific to women who go the masjid for prayer, however this is clearly not the case.  The mention of the masjid is not restrictive in this hadeeth, and the ruling applies to women going out anywhere.  Since the masjid is a place where the men have been encouraged to dress well for and wear perfume, then it is not disliked for the smell of the perfume to be in the masjid.  So the problem with women wearing perfume to the masjid is the distraction they would create and the potential fitnah that would ensue.  This is the 'illah (reason) for the prohibition.  Thus, if this is the ruling for being around the best people, the people who pray in the masjids, the people whom Allaah has praised in His Book as being those who truly believe in Him and that they are men who are not distracted by trade, then how much more does the prohibition apply to the most evil places, the gathering sites of the wicked (fujjaar), the most despised places on earth to Allaah...!!  So it as if he was using the masjid as an example of the best case scenario, where one would never imagine someone acting upon his desires and chasing after a woman... so then if it is not allowed to wear perfume in such a place, then what about the places where illicit behavior is very common!

This general application of the hadeeth seems to be what Aboo Daawood understood when he gathered the hadeeth in his Sunan and entitled the chapter: "The Chapter of What has Been Reported About Women Wearing Perfume Outside"

[4] A similar hadeeth in Saheeh Muslim (#444) forbids women from attending 'Eshaa' Prayer in the masjid if they have been affected by bakhoor (burned fragrances, like incense).  It is also to be understood in light of point #3.

[5] The hadeeth shows that the Companions used to enjoin the good and forbid the evil with women who were not in their family.

[6] The hadeeth also shows the practical implementation of tathab-but (being certain before acting), since Aboo Hurayrah asked the woman, "And you have perfumed yourself...?"  Notice that he did not assume that the scent was hers without asking.

And Allaah knows best.

Characteristics of the Best Women of Creation (part 2 of 3)

As Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh!

Insha Allah this finds you in the best of health and Iman.
@}-->-->---     @}-->-->---     @}-->-->---     @}-->-->---

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BEST WOMEN OF CREATION (PART 2 OF 3)

This type of woman is the one through which a man would receive happiness in his home and one who will raise a righteous family. The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) said,

“Everyone of you is a guardian, and is responsible for what is in his custody. A lady is a guardian of her husband's house and is responsible for it.”16

And Allah (subhannahu wa ta'ala) said,

“And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance.”17

By doing this, a woman can become of those truly obedient to Allah.

It must be noted that obedience to the husband is mentioned as being only in those affairs which are good, i.e. only in that which complies with the shari'ah (Laws) of Allah. So, if he orders her to pray, fast, and take care of the home, then this is all good and she should obey him in doing so. However, if he orders her with disobedience to Allah, then “There is no obedience to the creation when it involves disobedience to the Creator.”18 So if he orders her to be neglectful of her prayers or in her fasting, or he wants her to beautify herself in a way which is not permissible, or to leave the house wearing perfume etc., then she should not obey him in this as this is disobedience to Allah. The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) said,

“No obedience for evil deeds, obedience is required only in what is good.”19

THE RIGHTEOUS WOMAN should take care of and guard her herself and her honour. Allah praised Maryam the mother of ‘Isa (alayhis salam) for possessing this great quality of chastity. From this guarding of chastity comes many other affairs.

1. Lowering the gaze. Allah has ordered both the men and the women to lower their gaze and to protect their private parts.20
2. Not leaving the house wearing perfume or displaying ornaments. Allah has ordered the woman to cover herself up in order to protect her honour and chastity. It is the practise of jaahiliyyah (ignorance) for the women to go out uncovered, and they consider this to be progress and liberation! Rather, it is from the ways of shaytaan. Allah mentions in the Qur'aan that when shaytaan whispered to Aadam and Hawwa, and they ate from the tree, their private parts became apparent to them.21 So the way of shaytaan is to make apparent and to display the ‘aurah. Every society in which open displaying of the people's private parts is prolific is an evil society and is upon the path of destruction. The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) said, “When a woman applies perfume and then goes about in an assembly, she is like such and such i.e. an adulteress.”22

THE RIGHTEOUS WOMAN should not be one who is given to complaining and nagging, rather she should be one who brings happiness into the home. We can take an example from the story of Ibraaheem (alayhi sallam), when he left his wife, Hajar, in Makkah. Hajar said to him, “Who has ordered you to do this?” Ibraaheem answered her, saying, “Verily, my Lord has ordered me to do this”. So she said, “If this is Allah's order, then Allah will never leave us and destroy us.” A further example can be found in the story of Ismaa'eel (alayhi sallam) and his wife. Ibraaheem continued to visit Hajar and his son Ismaa'eel, until when his son had grown up and married he visited him at his home in Makkah. He knocked on the door and found that Ismaa'eel was not home. His wife was present but she did not recognise her husband's father. Ibraaheem began to question her as to her situation and whether or not she was contented etc. She replied that they were in a period of great poverty and trials, and she began complaining about her situation. So Ibraaheem said to her, “When Ismaa'eel returns, tell him to change the outer screen (lit. veil) of his house. So when Ismaa'eel returned, his wife informed him that an old man had visited him whilst he was out and that he had asked her about her situation, to which she replied as she had replied. Then she told him of the message Ibraaheem had left. Ismaa'eel then said to his wife, “Verily, it was my father and he ordered me to divorce you.” So he divorced her and married another woman. Some time later Ibraaheem came again to visit his son and again found that he was not home. So he asked Ismaa'eel's new wife about her situation and whether or not she was content. She replied, “Alhamdulillah. Allah has given us great blessings and given us all that we need,” even though at the time she had absolutely nothing in her house. So, before Ibraaheem left he said, “Tell Ismaa'eel to keep the outer screen of his house.” When Ismaa'eel returned, his wife told him of his visitor and what he had said. Ismaa'eel said, “That was my father and he told me to keep you as my wife.”23

Note how Ibraaheem, this great Prophet of Allah, described the woman as the outer screen of the house. This is because she is the keeper and protector of the house and those affairs concerning it. Whoever enters the house does so by her permission and knowledge. The shayateen wish for the women to leave their homes in their beautification, leaving behind their clothing, so that when the people have taken their pleasure from them, then they turn away from them as if they were nothing. Rather, the woman is as Ibraaheem described her, as she is the one who takes care of the affairs of the home. A poet once said, “The mother is (like) a school. If you take care of the mother, you take care of the whole society.” The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) said,

“O women, you should give charity and ask for much forgiveness. For I saw you in bulk amongst the dwellers of Hell.” A wise lady among them said, “Why is it, Messenger of Allah, that our folk are in bulk in Hell?” He (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) replied, “You curse too much and are ungrateful to your husbands. If one of you has a husband who is good to you for all of his life and then you see one thing from him which displeases you, you say ‘Verily, he was never good to me at all'.”24

So, as the intimate companion of her husband, the woman must ensure to take care of these affairs, for if she is good and righteous then the whole society becomes good. But if there are conflicts and disputes in the home, then this leads to the destruction of the society.

In the Qur'aan, Allah (subhannahu wa ta'ala) mentions some examples of the righteousness of women. He (subhannahu wa ta'ala) gave the stories of four women, two of which were righteous and two who were evil. As for the pious women, they were the wife of Fir'awn and Maryam the daughter of ‘Imraan.

When the wife of Fir'awn saw Musa (alayhi sallam) in the cradle, her eyes were full of love for him. She said to Fir'awn, “A comfort of the eye for me and for you. Kill him not, perhaps he may be of benefit to us, or we may adopt him as a son.”25 So he (Fir'awn) granted her wish and Musa grew up in her household. When he became a Prophet and began calling the people to Islam, she answered this call and became a Muslim, despite the fact that she was the wife of Fir'awn - the man who claimed to be Allah Himself, (subhannahu wa ta'ala) - and despite all that she possessed through being the wife of a king; she refused that and chose to be amongst Allah's company. This is a great example of how a woman chose the Hereafter over and above all of the wealth of this world.

The example of Maryam bint ‘Imraan was that she took care of herself and her private parts in such a way as shows us the great importance of the woman's being chaste and not going out of the house unclothed ,etc.

The first example of the two evil women is that of the wife of Nuh (alayhi sallam). She used to go and tell the people of Nuh about what he was doing and planning; working and plotting against her husband.

And the example of the wife of Lut (alayhi sallam) is similar. When the two angels came to Lut, she told his people that two young men had come to her house, so the people came in an attempt to do evil to them.27

Islam has forbidden that the secrets of the household be divulged outside, and these two examples show the evil of this action. Therefore, the example of a good woman is one who is quick in doing good deeds, she takes care of her private parts and does not spread the secrets of the home. She is one who will be a caller to good, one who closes the doors which lead to evil.

From the Sunnah we have the example of Umm Salamah - the wife of the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam), the mother of the Believers. She was a woman who possessed great intellect and was of good opinion. When the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) went to make ‘Umrah in the year 6AH, the Quraish prevented him from doing so and turned him back. He (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) told his companions, who were dressed in ihraam ready for ‘Umrah, to cut their hair and slaughter their animals. They were astonished, and were hesitant to do this. He ordered them again and still they did not do as he had commanded. The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) entered into the tent of Umm Salamah, unhappy and disturbed by what had happened, and he told her that he had ordered his companions to shave their heads and slaughter their animals but they did not do anything. Umm Salamah said, ‘Go yourself in the midst of your companions and cut your hair and slaughter your animal. They will follow your example'. So he did this and they all followed his example.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BEST WOMEN OF CREATION

By: Shaykh Saleem al Hilaalee

Verily Allah created us to worship Him, and He created everything in pairs (male and female) in order that life may continue and that His worship may be established. Allah says,

“And Allah did create you (Aadam) from dust, then from Nutfah (male and female discharge semen drops i.e. Aadam's offspring), then He made you pairs (male and female).”2

Both the man and the woman have obligations and duties to fulfil, each one's duties in harmony with the other's; the woman's duties complete and perfect those of the man, and the man's duties complete and perfect those of the woman. From those qualities which Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) have praised, and which are required in a believing woman in order for her to perform her duties correctly, the greatest of these is the quality of her possessing the Deen. The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) said,

“A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her family status, her beauty and her deen. So you should marry the religious woman (otherwise) you will be a loser.”3

As for the husband, he should also be a righteous man, as the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) said,

“When someone with whose deen and character you are satisfied asks your daughter in marriage, accede to his request. If you do not do so, there will be temptation on Earth and extensive corruption.”4

Indeed the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) was sent to perfect the people's character, and he (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) praised the woman who possesses these noble qualities and perfect character, saying that she is to a man the best possession in this world -

“The whole world is a provision, and the best object of benefit of the world is the pious woman.” 5

Allah has created the woman as a companion for the man, in order that they may live in this world performing their duties and observing Allah's commands correctly. The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) said,

“I was sent to perfect good character,”6 and, “Among the Muslims the most perfect, as regards his faith, is the one whose character is excellent, and the best among you are those who treat their wives well.”7

In order to achieve success in this world and the Hereafter the woman must adopt this methodology of perfecting her character, beginning with those affairs concerning her home. The woman is an essential component in the building of the home in order that it may be established upon Taqwa (fear of Allah & piety). Allah says that those who believe say,

“Our Lord! Bestow on us from our wives and our offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes...”8

Thus, the correction of the household is the first step towards the correction of the society.

THE RIGHTEOUS WOMAN is the one who knows her responsibilities, her rights and obligations, and performs those acts which are obligatory upon her. The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) said,

“If a woman prayed her five daily prayers, fasted in the month (of Ramadan), protected her private parts from illegal sexual intercourse, and obeyed her husband, it will be said to her: ‘Enter Paradise from whichever gate you like',”9

And he (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) said,

“Islam is based on (the following) five (principles): to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad (sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam) is His Messenger, to offer the prayers dutifully and perfectly, to pay Zakaat, to perform Hajj, and to observe fast during the month of Ramadhaan.”10

This is the first thing which the woman must take care of in all circumstances; whether difficulty, ease, pleasure or dislike - i.e. to perform the five obligatory pillars of Islam. Allah says, recorded in a hadeeth qudsi, “And the most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me is what I have enjoined upon him.”11

THE RIGHTEOUS WOMAN should know the rights of her husband upon her and should obey him in all that is obedience to Allah. When Mu'aadh (radiy Allahu 'anhu) came to the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) and wanted to make sajdah (prostration) to him [as an act of respect], he (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) stopped him and said, “If I were to order anyone to prostrate himself before another, I should order a woman to prostrate herself before her husband.”12 This is because of the great position of the husband with regards to his wife. He (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) also said,

“Whenever a man calls his wife to their bed but she refuses to come, letting him spend the night angry with her, she is cursed by the angels until she relents.”13

And he (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) also said,

“By the one in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad! No woman has fulfilled her obligations to her Lord until she has fulfilled her obligations to her husband. Even if he were to ask her for herself when she is mounted in the saddle, she would not refuse his request.”14

These ahaadeeth emphasize the great responsibility of the woman to obey her husband in all that is in obedience to Allah, for surely obedience to the husband is part of obedience to Allah. Allah has ordered the woman to be obedient to her husband and the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) praised the woman who brings happiness and pleasure to her husband. He (sallallahu 'alayhi wassallam) said,

“Marry the loving and fertile, for I will compete with the other prophets with the number of my followers.”15
